I believe that people conform to the group because they feel a type of pressure of them being wrong and do not want to look like they do not belong there. when someone is able to team up they have the comfort of their answers are right since someone else has the same as for someone that writes them down I believe you can feel no pressure no one will know what you wrote and be able to feel free.
